OPEN CALL FAQ'S

When is the next open call?

The Open Call for the upcoming edition will start in the autumn of 2025. Expressions of interest must be submitted by the date specified in the Open Call.

Who can participate in the open call?

Artists and designers – including professionals, students and institutions – are invited to submit expressions of interest. We encourage submissions from creatives with diverse backgrounds.

What kind of work can be submitted?

Submissions should incorporate light as a central element and may include:

  • Site-specific work – designed for specific locations on Spier Wine Farm
  • Sculptural, object-based work
  • Interactive art
  • Digital works that foreground technology
  • Video art

Experimentation and innovation are encouraged. While there is no fixed theme, artists may explore ideas related to technology, issues affecting South Africa, resilience, enchantment, exuberance and ‘the working wine farm’.

What funding is available?

Spier Arts Trust will fully or partially fund selected installations. Artists must submit a provisional but realistic budget indicating the level of funding that is required.

What is the selection process?
  1. Expressions of interest must be submitted by the specified date.
  2. A selection committee led by curators Jay Pather and Vaughn Sadie will review submissions.
  3. Shortlisted artists may be asked to submit a more detailed proposal.
What are the submission requirements?

Expressions of interest must include:

  • A biography (200 words) of the artist/collective/studio
  • A short overview of the conceptual interests of the work and its category (300 words)
  • A concise description of the work, including concept sketches (300 words)
  • A description of the use of light in the work (150 words)
  • A description of audience interaction/engagement, preferably with a video (150 words)
  • A provisional budget indicating full or partial funding needs
  • Web links or images of the proposed work (or examples of previous work)
