Repast II

‘Repast II’ invites the viewer to reflect on the interconnectedness of memory and nature and reevaluate their understanding of place and belonging.

Eucalyptus trees are an invasive and problematic species in South Africa, yet they provoke a sense of longing for the artists as Australians and foreigners on this land.

In ‘Repast II’ music and imagery captured in the Ngeringa Winery in the Adelaide Hills of South Australia become the memory space of these gum trees on the grounds of Spier. They are interlopers born and grown on a land that is not their own – but also it is the only earth they have ever known.

By creating a space of connection with Eucalypts remembering a place they have never been, the viewer becomes a part of these living recollections; an intangible ecology of sights and sounds that exist in contrast with the deep realness of the physical landscape encompassing the installation.
